Come to the Operation American Lifesaver on May 17.
On Saturday May 17, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary will be kicking off National Safe Boating Week with the “Operation American Life Saver” event.  This all day public event will be taking place at the Smithtown Marina.  It is planned to be a day of boating education and safety promotion.
This event will have the following demonstrations and activities:  a display booth with boating safety equipment and literature display; a Coast Guard Auxiliary Operational Facility that will be used in a simulated rescue situation manned by CG Auxiliary Crew; a Kayaking Safety display; and a boat set up displaying proper equipment for safety. There will be other agencies there including local Fire Departments to demonstrate the safe removal of a victim from a boat. We are also proud that Coast Guard Station Eaton’s Neck will also be represented at this event.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 22 has secured a grant from the Boat US foundation. As a result, we have acquired signs that simply say “Wear It” with a picture of a life vest on it. These signs have been donated to the Town of Smithtown Department of Parks. These signs will be hung by the boat ramp at the marina on this day and will serve as a last minute reminder to the boating public to put on their personal flotation device. We think that this event will instill in the public a special awareness for safe boating and demonstrate the commitment by local government officials to promote boating safety.
This day will revolve around The North American Safe Boating Campaign. The North American Safe Boating Campaign is a large-scale international public awareness and outreach campaign intended to save lives by encouraging safe and responsible behavior on the part of recreational boaters (www.SafeBoatingCouncil.org).
Since most recreational boating fatalities result from drowning, and over 90 percent of those who drown were not wearing a life jacket, life jacket wear is considered the single most important behavior change that could prevent deaths on the water.
Coast Guard Auxiliary safety vessel examiners will be available during the day to perform private safety exams for local boat owners.  The vessel safety check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety.  No citations are issued and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display if the vessel has passed the examination.

4/5 Public Appearance by Flotilla Officers.
At 4:00am on April 5 US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2204 met with Smithtown Boaters waiting on line for the town's mooring sign ups.  While staking out positions on line to get their favorite mooring location, boat owners were greeted by uniformed Auxiliary volunteers.  Auxiliary Flotilla 2204 members were there to help local recreational boaters prepare for this year's season and to make owners and operators aware of the services the Auxiliary provides.  Coast Guard Auxiliary members are volunteers who serve the community with recreational boating courses and vessel safety checks.  In addition, the Auxiliary actively provides safety patrols on area waterways and assists the Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as search and rescue, and marine environmental protection.
